EN 511 Standard Explained: Thermal Cold Protection for Safety Gloves

The EN 511 European standard specifies the requirements and test methods for Freezer Gloves against convective cold, contact cold, and water penetration.

When choosing thermal work gloves for cold storage, outdoor construction, or winter logistics, look for the EN 511 snowflake pictogram accompanied by a 3-digit code.

Code Structure & Rating Breakdown

The 3-digit code beneath the EN 511 pictogram follows a strict order:

EN511 A B C
Position Performance Parameter Rating Range Testing Description
1st (A) Convective Cold 0 – 4 Measures thermal insulation properties against moving cold air. Higher ratings provide better insulation.
2nd (B) Contact Cold 0 – 4 Measures thermal resistance when directly touching cold objects. Higher ratings prevent frostbite during direct contact.
3rd (C) Water Penetration 0 or 1

Tests waterproofness:

0: Water penetration within 30 minutes (Not waterproof)

1: No water penetration after 30 minutes (Waterproof)

Note: If any position is marked with an X, it indicates the glove was not tested for that specific property.

Performance Levels Explained

  • Level 0: Failed the minimum requirement or not tested.

  • Levels 1 – 4 (Convective & Contact Cold):

    • Level 1: Basic thermal protection (suitable for mild cold or short exposures).

    • Level 2 – 3: Intermediate to heavy-duty thermal insulation (ideal for cold storage and winter outdoor work).

    • Level 4: Maximum protection against extreme sub-zero temperatures or prolonged contact with ice-cold surfaces.

  • Mechanical Requirement: All EN 511 certified gloves must also achieve at least Level 1 for abrasion and tear resistance under the EN 388 mechanical standard to ensure durability in cold environments.

Real-World Example

If a cold-weather work glove displays the following marking:

EN511 2 3 1

It offers the following performance levels:

  • 2: Moderate thermal insulation against ambient cold air.

  • 3: High thermal resistance when handling icy or frozen items directly.

  • 1: Fully waterproof (passes the 30-minute water immersion test).
